John Preston is a Grammaton Cleric of the city-state of Libria, a society which has come to being after the Third World War early in the 21st Century. He holds the First Class rank, making him one of the elite members of the Clerics, a new arm of the law of this almost post-apocolyptic world given the task to ensure the security and survival of their way of life.

Hall of Justice
After the catastrophic result of World War III, the survivors knew that they would not survive a fourth. It was therefore decided to eradicate what they believed to be the cause of conflict: Human emotion. Prozium was therefore created, a drug which, when taken in regular intervals, would subdue and suppress feelings within people, thus creating peace. The Tetragrammaton Council, led by The Father - a mysterious, God-like individual - deemed it illegal to feel and all Librians were expected to take it on pain of incineration. It is the duty of the Clerics to safeguard Librians from sense-offenders, people who still feel, and to destroy all items classed as EC-10 for "emotional content". This is what John Preston lives to do ... until he misses his morning dose.
